Where Penstead is different
The daily cap exists because the file is uploaded
Smallpdf processes documents on its servers, so every task costs it compute and bandwidth and has to be rationed. Penstead's editing, merging, splitting, compressing, OCR, redaction, form filling and self-signing all run inside your browser tab — the file never leaves the machine, so there is nothing to ration and no daily cap on any plan, including the free one. That is a consequence of how it is built rather than a promise we could quietly withdraw.
The thing we charge for is the thing that costs us money
Converting Office files needs a server, and so does sending a document to somebody else for signature — the document has to be stored for them to open it, and we have to email the link. Those are metered. Everything that runs on your own machine is free and unmetered, and we have no way to make it otherwise without rewriting it to work the way Smallpdf's does.
Signing is the product, not an upsell
Smallpdf routes signature requests to Sign.com, a separate brand with its own account and its own plan. In Penstead the document you have just fixed is the document you send, in the same session, and the signed copy comes back with an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion.
