Terms of Service
Last updated July 29, 2026
By using Penstead (the “Service”) you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.
The service
Penstead provides tools to view, convert, edit, sign, share, and otherwise work with PDF files. Most tools run in your browser; a few use a server as described in our Privacy Policy.
The tools on this website are free and need no account. Sending a document to someone else for signature is the paid part of the Service; the sections on plans, payment and refunds below apply to it.
Acceptable use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Upload, convert, share, or distribute content that is illegal, infringing, malicious, deceptive (e.g. phishing), or that violates others’ rights.
- Host or transmit malware, or attempt to disrupt, overload, or abuse the Service or its infrastructure.
- Use automated means to flood the Service or circumvent rate limits.
You are solely responsible for the documents you process and share, and for having the right to do so. We may remove shared content or disable links that violate these terms or that are reported as abusive, and may limit or block access to protect the Service.
Plans, auto-renewal and cancellation
Everything that runs in your browser is free, without limit, and without an account. Paid plans raise the limits on the things our servers do — conversion, share links, and sending documents out for signature. What each plan includes is set out on the pricing page.
A paid plan renews automatically. A monthly plan is charged every month, and an annual plan every year, at the price shown when you subscribed, until you cancel. We do not ask again before each renewal, so cancelling is how it stops.
You can cancel at any timefrom “Manage billing” on your account page, which opens the billing portal. There is no cancellation fee, you do not have to contact us, and you do not have to explain. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for — you keep the plan until then rather than losing it the moment you click.
If a payment fails we keep your plan working while the card is retried, and email you so you can update it. If it is still unpaid roughly a week after the period ends, the account returns to the free plan.
What changes when a plan ends
Returning to the free plan does not delete anything you have made. It does apply the free plan’s limits from that point:
- Share links that never expired get an expiry date again. We will not break links you have already sent without warning: existing links keep working until the end of your paid period, and we email you before any of them lapse.
- Signature requests already sent stay live. People can still sign them, and completed documents and their certificates remain available. The monthly allowance for new ones returns to the free figure.
- File-size and conversion limits return to the free figures for new work.
Payment and refunds
Payments are processed by Stripe. We never receive or store your card details. Prices are in US dollars and exclude any tax that may apply where you are.
Subscriptions. If you cancel within 14 days of your first payment and have not sent a signature request or created a share link on the plan, tell us and we will refund it in full. After that, cancelling stops future charges rather than refunding the current period, since you keep the plan for the rest of it. If we change the price, we will tell you before it takes effect and you can cancel first. Where the law where you live gives you a stronger right to a refund or a cooling-off period, that law applies rather than this paragraph.
Electronic signatures
Penstead’s signing features are provided as a convenience and are not legal advice. You are responsible for ensuring an electronic signature is appropriate and valid for your particular use and jurisdiction.
No warranty
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any output will be fit for a particular purpose. Always keep your own copy of important documents.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Penstead and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, arising from your use of the Service. Where you have paid us, our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid in the twelve months before it arose. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, and some jurisdictions give consumers rights that these terms do not override.
Changes
We may update these terms; continued use after a change constitutes acceptance. The “last updated” date above reflects the current version.
