A Sejda alternative without the hourly limit

Sejda is one of the better PDF tools on the web and unusually honest about its constraints — it tells you up front that the free tier has hourly and page limits. This page is about what changes when the work happens on your machine instead of theirs, and where Sejda is still the better tool.

What Sejda does better

  • A genuinely deep toolset, including a capable text editor and OCR that have been refined over years of real use.
  • A desktop application, which Penstead has no equivalent of — and which is the right answer for documents that should never touch a browser.
  • Server-side processing that handles very large files and long-running jobs without asking anything of your laptop's memory.
  • It has been around long enough to have handled the strange, malformed PDFs that only show up at volume.

What Sejda publishes about its free plan

  • The free tier is metered: Sejda describes it as having page and hourly limits, limited file uploads, and tool-specific limits.

  • Paid plans are advertised as removing those caps — "unlimited documents, no page or hourly limits" — with uploads up to 500MB and tasks up to 21 minutes.

  • Pricing is $7.50 per user per month, $5 for a 7-day pass, or $63 per user per year for desktop and web.

Where Penstead is different

There is no hourly limit to hit

Sejda's free caps exist because the work happens on its servers, and server time has to be rationed. Editing, merging, splitting, compressing, OCR, redaction, form filling and self-signing all run inside your browser tab in Penstead, so there is no per-hour or per-page ceiling on any plan — including the free one. The only limit is what your own machine can hold.

The file does not leave the device

For every tool listed above, nothing is uploaded. That matters less for a holiday itinerary than for a term sheet, and it is the reason the free tier can be uncapped at all: those operations cost us nothing to provide.

It ends in a signature rather than a download

Sejda hands you the finished file. Penstead's point is the step after — place the fields, send each signer their own private link, and get the executed copy back with an audit trail and a Certificate of Completion. Signers never create an account.

Use Sejda if…

  • You want a desktop app, or are working with files too large for a browser tab.
  • You need a specific tool Penstead does not have.
  • You are doing heavy batch work and would rather a server carried it.

Use Penstead if…

  • You keep running into an hourly or page limit on work that could happen locally.
  • The document is confidential enough that you would rather it were not uploaded.
  • Somebody else has to sign it when you are done.

Try it on the document you have open

Every browser tool is free with no account and no daily cap. Sending for signature is free 5 times a month.
